"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated supporters have publicly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
