Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
